How can I transfer large amounts of money from the US to Germany?

We will be moving from California to Germany next year. We want to sell our house in the US and buy another house in Germany. What is the best way to get the money we get from the house from the US into Germany? Are there any taxes or restrictions I have to watch out for?
I am a German citizen and my husband is an American citizen.

I believe a major factor in this is whether or not you will have german citizenship. The best way would probably be a wire transfer from you current bank to a german bank, or thru a worldwide bank like ING that gives you access around the globe.
The citizenship issue would determine whether you owe us and/or german taxes.
