I just moved from Indiana to New York and have a bank account in each state. It is a huge hassle to get my Indiana bank account closed so I was wondering if it was possible to simply write myself a check for the entire balance in my Indiana account and deposit it into my New York account. I don't need the money urgently though - I just want it at some point!

My Indiana account requires everything in writing and nothing can be done on their website at all. Can't close accounts or setup direct deposits either.

Thanks!

Write yourself a check and deposit it in your new bank. They may place a hold on it (because it's out of state and you are a new account). Just be sure to either leave a small balance to cover your service charges in Indiana or for any remaining automatic payments you have yet to switch over.
Ultimately, after you are sure everything has cleared - you should be able to write a check to bring the Indiana account to zero. Some banks close accounts automatically when the balance gets to zero - you'll need to call them and ask. You could also write a quick note asking them to send you the balance in your account and close it out.
